Speculation Mounting For The NFL Draft
December 5, 2013 in Sports News
The Houston Texans have ‘not won much of nothing’ this year. For whatever reason, the preseason expectations held out for the Texans just did not pan out. Matt Schaub is out, local hero quarterback Case Keenum is in and Houston is already starting to regroup for next year. They might as well because the Texans have now been eliminated from any chance of making the playoffs this year.
The up side of that situation in Houston is that they will get the very first pick in the upcoming 2014 NFL Draft in April and speculation is running high as to just which player the Texans will pick from the wealth of talent available.
Do they stick with Keenum or perhaps go after another Texan in the person of Johnny Manziel at QB? That might be an interesting fit. Of course, Teddy Bridgewater of Louisville is currently the number one rated quarterback in the draft. Or, on the other hand, imagine if they drafted Jadeveon Clowney as the other defensive bookend to JJ Watt, that’s scary even to think about.
Houston took over the number one draft pick from the Jacksonville Jaguars after they actually won a couple of games but the Jags are still in line to pick up some pretty major talent. They need a good young quarterback and there are several available including AJ McCarron from nearby Alabama and Derek Carr from out at Fresno State.
To the great surprise of their fans, the Atlanta Falcons have also been eliminated from the playoffs with still four games to go in the regular season. The Falcons need some beefing up on defense and will have first class players like linebacker Anthony Barr from UCLA as well defensive tackle Louis Nix III from Notre Dame to chose from.
The other leading contenders for a top draft pick are the Washington Redskins who, like Atlanta, Tampa Bay and Jacksonville, are sitting at 3-9. Washington already has a star quarterback in RGIII but they desperately need to get him some better protection and give him time to do his thing. The Aggies outstanding offensive tackle Jake Matthews will probably be given close consideration along with big Taylor Lwean from Michigan.
Tampa Bay seems to be on to something with Glennon at QB and Sammy Watkins from Clemson might just fit right in there. The Minnesota Vikings will be in the market for a quarterback and may zero in on Brett Hundly of UCLA.
